JOB SUMMARY
He/She is responsible for the care of the residents in a designated smoke area of the facility. He/She is
knowledgeable of residents who are considered unsafe smokers.
The Smoke Monitor/Smoke Aide is responsible to the Licensed Staff assigned to each specific resident.
EDUCATION
Must be able to read, write, and follow oral instructions. High school education or equivalent is
preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS

provided at all times for this group as well as others in the facility.

for resident care.

9. Must be willing to work preferred shifts as scheduled and assist on other shifts as needed to assure
adequate staffing to meet the needs of each resident.

Nursing Department and other departments.
12. Must have ability to monitor the resident as per facility policy and procedures.
13. Must display ability to adapt to on-the-job training and adhere to standards of the facility,
assisting residents, caring for equipment and supplies and developing good understanding of
basic safety practices.
14. Must be able and willing to function appropriately in a disaster or evacuation of the facility.
15. Must demonstrate ability to follow direction of supervising staff.
16. Must have a pre - employment and an annual Tuberculosis screening examination.
RESPONSIBILITIES
It is to be understood that the Smoke Monitor/Smoke Aide works by general, consistent, pre-arranged
assignments as the basis for each shift worked, but must be able to accept changes and adapt to added
assignment as the need arises. In addition, each Smoke Monitor/Smoke Aide must work with each other
to assure safe practices for each resident and staff are followed.
1. Signs in per facility protocol.
2. Responsible for obtaining an updated list of all residents who are unsafe smokers including
recommended interventions.
3. Ensures that there is no oxygen in the smoke area at any time
4. Responsible for monitoring all residents in the smoke area, monitoring the area, and intervening as
needed for ant resident safety issue.
5. Reports ant safety issues to the Charge Nurse or Director of Nurses.
6. Offer assistance and assist all residents as needed.
7. Does not leave the assigned area when supervising an unsafe smoker until the smoker has finished and
left the area or he/she relieved by another employee.
8. The smoke area is to be kept free from trash and clutter by the smoke monitor.
9. During inclement weather (extreme cold, extreme heat, storms, etc.), monitor will limit the exposure of
residents. If indoor smoke area is available, residents will be encouraged to smoke inside due to
weather conditions. If unable to redirect residents who wish to remain outside during inclement
weather their nurse will be notified.
10. Assists residents to plan their time for smoking to enable them to be well cared for as well as attend
their desired functions during the shift. (i.e. activities, visits with each other and their families,
outings, meals, quiet times, etc.)
11. Reports any changes in condition or any resident/family concerns to licensed nurse.
12. Maintains safe environment at all times.
13. Performs other tasks as assigned.
14. Attends required staff in-services, meetings, orientation, and continuing education activities as required.
15. Is aware of and adheres to Patient’s Bill of Rights and confidentiality of patient information including
HIPAA regulations.
16. Interacts with patients and family members, co-workers, clinical and ancillary staff in a non-judgmental,
supportive and calm manner.
17. Is aware of Patient Abuse Reporting Law.
18. Participates as assigned in the orientation of new staff and demonstrates a positive, helpful and enthusiastic
attitude.
