FERRYBOAT DECKHAND 1-3
As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a (Ferryboat Deckhand 1, 2, or 3depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). Ferryboat Deckhand 1- has a minimum hire rate of $16.06/hourly, with an additional $2.00 an hour for every hour worked.
Ferryboat Deckhand 2- has a minimum hire rate of $17.18/hourly , with an additional $2.00 an hour for every hour worked.
Ferryboat Deckhand 3-has a minimum hire rate of $19.67/hourly, with an additional $2.00 an hour for every hour worked.
No Civil Service test score is required in order to be considered for this vacancy.
TWIC card will be required upon appointment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
No experience or training is required.
NOTE:
Possession of a current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) may be required at the time of appointment.
FUNCTION OF WORK:
To perform manual operations and routine maintenance work aboard a ferry vessel.
LEVEL OF WORK:
Entry.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Direct from a Ferryboat Supervisor. May also receive guidance from a higher-level Ferryboat Deckhand or Ferryboat Operator. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.
LOCATION OF WORK:
Department of Transportation and Development. Other locations may be approved by SCS.
JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from other marine occupations by the presence of tasks aboard a ferry vessel.
Differs from Ferryboat Deckhand 2 by the absence of independence in performing routine manual tasks aboard a ferry vessel.
EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.
Supports ferry vessel operations by assisting higher-level deckhands in collecting tolls, operating gates, and directing traffic in accordance with safety protocols.
Supports operation of the ferry vessel by assisting higher-level deckhands in a variety of manual tasks such as fastening hawsers and mooring lines, moving anchors, coiling ropes, etc.
Assists higher-level deckhands in routine maintenance tasks for the ferry vessel such as cleaning, chipping, scraping, painting, changing oil, polishing bright work, etc.
Assists higher-level deckhands in maintaining and repairing the ferry vessel and its equipment; learns skills in painting, pipefitting, carpentry, electrical and/or welding trades.
Loads and unloads material and equipment for use on ferry vessels.
Learns to operate emergency safety equipment such as firefighting hoses, fire extinguishers, rescue boats, life rings, floats, etc.
Sweeps and washes the deck, engine room and other areas of the ferry vessel.
