A bachelor's degree in one of the following fields: public health, biological sciences, physical sciences, earth sciences, environmental sciences, engineering or a related field.

To train in conducting environmental health science activities, such as inspections, investigations, quality assurance, quality control and environmental health risk assessments, related to collecting, analyzing and interpreting chemical, physical, biological, demographic, and other data about toxic environmental contamination, hazardous substance emergency events or environmental regulatory standards in order to protect the health and safety of Louisiana residents by recommending public health actions to the Assistant Secretary, State Health Officer, and environmental regulatory agencies.

Examples of Work
This position is assigned to the Section of Environmental Epidemiology and Toxicology's (SEET), Occupational Health and Injury (Occ Health) Program within the Bureau of Infectious Diseases in the Office of Public Health (OPH). The Occ Health Program is hiring an Environmental Health Scientist I, Environmental Health Scientist II, or an Environmental Health Scientist Coordinator totrack and investigate risks associated with heavy metals, carbon monoxide, pesticides, and environmental spills. This position is essential in ensuring workplace and community safety through data analysis, case investigations, and public outreach.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct in-depth case investigations of heavy metal and carbon monoxide exposures to identify sources and mitigate risks.
- Analyze exposure data and prepare annual reports to inform public health initiatives
- Investigate pesticide-related health incidents to assess potential risks.
- Act as a public health resource, responding to inquiries regarding heavy metals, carbon monoxide, and pesticides.
- Provide data analysis and management support for the Occupational Health Program, assisting with special projects focused on worker health and safety outreach.
- Assist in reviewing emergency services’ reports containing information on varied chemical release events and distribute them to the appropriate regional responders to determine if any public health action is needed; identify chemical(s) of concern, health effects, medical management, and maps of the area, which display, incident location, points of interest, and sensitive populations. This position requires weekend and holiday screening duties approximately twice per month.
