The Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON), a program of the Board of Regents, as a consortium is a statewide academic endeavor to focus and strengthen the effectiveness of foundational marine science needed to address the environmental and socioeconomic challenges facing Louisiana and the nation.

LUMCON recently expanded its programs through the opening of a maritime research and outreach facility in Houma (Blue Works).
Position Overview
The Coastal Biogeochemistry Lab at the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON), led by Dr. Havalend Steinmuller, is seeking a research technician to join our research team. We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and organized individual to participate in field and laboratory work studying mangrove encroachment in coastal wetlands. The research technician will be responsible for coordinating and executing field sampling, sample analysis in the laboratory, instrument maintenance, and laboratory support tasks. The technician will report directly to Dr. Steinmuller and will oversee undergraduate laboratory assistants and/or volunteers. The technician will additionally be involved in various outreach efforts associated with the Coastal Biogeochemistry Lab and LUMCON. The technician will have opportunities to collaborate on other projects within the Coastal Biogeochemistry Lab.
Minimum Qualifications
- B.S. in biogeochemistry, coastal/marine science, microbial ecology, oceanography, chemistry, or a related field.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to lift 40 pounds and participate in extended field work within the hot, humid climate of south Louisiana.
- Comfortable working outdoors in and around water.
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
- The skills and certifications necessary to operate and trailer LUMCON small vessels (https://lumcon.edu/small-boats/) – or the willingness to quickly obtain these skills.
- Familiarity with data management.
- Organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
Ideal Candidate/Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a laboratory setting, preferably with the following instrumentation: gas chromatographs, elemental analyzers, spectrophotometers, and/or total organic carbon analyzers.
- Experience in a field setting, preferably with collecting soil cores.
- Experience with statistical computing, preferably R.
- Completion of a Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Boater Education course or an applicable alternate course.
Essential Duties
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Coordinate and complete soil and sediment sampling.
- Assist with field work.
- Obtain, process, and assist with analysis of plant, soil, and sediment samples.
- Assist with data entry and organization.
- Attend lab meetings.
- Contribute to peer reviewed publications as appropriate.
- Operate small vessels.
- Assist with instrument maintenance and laboratory support tasks.
- Mentor undergraduate students and/or volunteers.
