Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession Of a Current Louisiana Sanitarian's License Issued By The Louisiana State Board Of Examiners For Sanitarians Plus One Of The Following:
Four years of experience as a licensed sanitarian; OR
A master's degree in public health, food science, dairy science, environmental or sanitary science, or one of the physical or biological sciences plus three years of experience as a licensed sanitarian.
Necessary Special Requirements:
Positions in the Molluscan Shellfish program require that applicants complete the Louisiana Boating Education program and be certified by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Job Distinction:
Differs from Sanitarian 4 by the presence of responsibility for supervising subordinate staff of Sanitarians and acting as Sanitarian Parish Manager in a heavily populated parish; or by responsibility for serving as Program Manager for multiple public health environmental and consumer protection program(s) in a regional office or headquarters office.
Differs from Sanitarian 6 by the absence of responsibility for the administration of multiple public health and environmental consumer protection programs for several functional units.

AS A PARISH MANAGER
Supervises or conducts inspections of water treatment and sewage disposal systems.
Serves as expert witness at hearings, enforcement proceedings and court cases.
Represents the Department in developing and presenting programs at meetings and educational forums concerning compliance with and enforcement of state and federal regulations.
Reviews and approves plans and specifications for new construction or renovations to retail food establishments.
Conducts emergency response activities associated with natural and man- made disasters.
Performs related work as assigned including scheduling training activities for new personnel.
AS A PROGRAM MANAGER
Manages public health environmental and consumer protection program(s) by planning, organizing and implementing long and short-term program objectives and goals for a functional unit or geographical area.
Prepares and compiles facility and establishment inspection reports and evaluates outcomes of inspections and investigations and initiates appropriate follow up actions or sanctions to achieve compliance.
Develops and presents programs to agencies, associations, local, state, and federal governmental bodies, as well as schools and universities concerning compliance with and enforcement of the laws and regulations pertinent to the program.
Serves as a liaison with federal, state and local governmental bodies to coordinate activities, sample point of collection sites for a complex environmental or consumer protection program within a district, region or statewide.
Responsible for the coordination of comprehensive and complex inspections of establishments and facilities within a district, region or statewide to monitor compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations.
Manages district, region or statewide program staff involved in seizures and embargoes of products found or suspected of being adulterated, misbranded, not in compliance with applicable standards, or which may pose a threat to the health and safety of the public.
