The Museum Assistant at the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum handles basic responsibilities related to museum operations including opening/closing the museum, greeting visitors, accepting payments, and providing information to the public. Applicants must have excellent communication skills and the ability to interact positively with children, adults, and large groups. The ideal applicant should have a strong work ethic with the ability to adapt to stressful situations while maintaining a positive attitude. This is a part-time position requiring 15-20 hours per week for $13/hr. This position reports to the Executive Director of the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center. The schedule may vary depending on staffing requirements. Hours will generally be Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am-5:00pm with occasional weekdays or special events.

Education
- High school diploma or equivalence
Experience
- Experience working with the public
- Experience handling cash transactions and operating a cash register
Proficiency in the use of computers for:

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Museum Coordinator performs a wide range of duties including the following:
General
- Perform opening and closing procedures with accuracy
- Greet museum visitors and event guests with an upbeat, positive attitude
- Answer multi-line telephone and route calls/messages as necessary
- Receive, record, and secure all revenues received from admission fees, merchandise sales, and events
- Monitor galleries and public areas for inappropriate behavior and report safety or security concerns
- Learn the basic information about the museum including facilities, exhibits, and event policies
- Answer questions from visitors and tourists of all ages
- Inform visitors about the museum and tours if necessary
- Perform security duties as required including completing incident reports and contacting local law enforcement as needed
- Be responsible for basic upkeep and cleaning of the reception area, gift shop, restrooms, event spaces, and other areas of the museum as assigned/needed
Merchandise Sales
- Accurately handle payment transactions through use of a cash register and/or computer
Special Events
- Assist with working special events, including setup and breakdown of chairs and tables, as needed
- Communicating museum special event rules and policies to event organizers and guests
